Hello,
I purchased this little pot at a local thrift store. The triangle patterns look like a slip glaze maybe? I'm wondering if it might be Cochiti pottery? It is not signed but appears to be in nice condition. Does anyone have any ideas of what it might be and how old?
Thank you for any information!
No, not Native American. It's Mexican, from the Tarahumara, in the Copper Canyon region. It's contemporary.
Thank you! When you say contemporary, how many years does that go back? Just curious. It's a nice little pot and it's nice to know something about it.
Best,
Melinda
As to the Tarahumara pot, they have been making pottery for generations, but the majority of pots on the market today were made for sale as tourist items.
The style and decoration date this to around the 1950s or newer. It's a small pot, made for the tourist trade rather than for actual use.
So "contemporary" meaning not prehistoric. Still made entirely by hand, no glaze, no kiln. But sold wholesale to shops and found all over the world.
Thank you again! It is so interesting to find out where little treasures come from. I see things I like, but then I also want to know what they are.
Best,
Melinda
