I wonder if anyone has any thoughts ... Please
Turned wood vases working with the natural wood grain. I don't think they are heavy enough to be lignum vitae, but beautifully made. 6" high. The rough base has thrown me .... I wonder if they are African, and how old they may be.
Any help very much appreciated
If they are fairly light compared to the lignum vitae the grain and coloration in the first photo suggests Rosewood. I seriously doubt you will ever know the age but I wouldn't expect them to be antique. There are none of the signs of age that should be there. No fading, no wear spots and no signs of spider webbing or cracks in the bases. I have been turning for years and have become familiar with what to look for from other turners. I believe most would agree with me. The wood of the base appears to be raw wood and not in any way sealed but it could be my eyes as they are old as dirt.
fhrjr2 ... Thank you so much for your reply. Rosewood sounds good. You are right there are no signs of age wear, they are pretty much pristine. The bases are not raw, they are sort of' sealed, but not as much as the body of the vases. I'm happy to have found them just the same, and very much appreciate your input
