Dating back to the early 1970's, one of the my earliest collecting areas was Australian 'drip glaze' pottery. I had seen some of these pots at the home of my friends Alex and Tony in 1977 and the 'drip glaze' decoration of the John Campbell factory struck a deep chord and I was hooked. In those days it was bought cheaply and I soon amassed a large collection of them. The John Campbell name dated back to the 1880's in Launceston Tasmania. Tasmania is the large island to the south eastern edge of the Australian continent. John Campbell died in 1929, so this type of ware dates to the period when the pottery was run by his son Colin and continued until its closure finally in 1959 : a good run by any standard for a pottery business in Australia.
So it was a bit of a surprise to see this small pot in Vinnies the other day - small but beautiful to my eye.

Well done, Kevin, this is a super Vinnies find!
I believe I was lucky to have once owned a (possible) piece of unmarked John Campbell pottery which had belonged to my grandmother. On dispersing my late mother's estate I sold it to a collector who thought it to be a Campbell piece.
As for your friends Tony & Alex...did they have a house in Potts Point...& was Tony a jewellery designer of great renown? If so, my partner was a friend of theirs & I recall first making acquaintance with them at an antiques fair in the 1990s. Small world? :-)

Hi Marin …. not the same pair. Alex is still with us but Tony was a librarian. Clever lad he even made an appearance on Pick a Box when he was still at school. But Alex has a stall at Wenty and I hope to see him there when it begins again in January.
