I bought this German prisoner of war made box with original contents, it has some words carved on the inside I’ve tried to use paper and a pencil to rub it but it’s not quite deep enough to show on paper, would anyone know how I could possibly make the carving more visible without damaging the box, I’ve tried to photograph it the best I could, I thought maybe use chalk??

You can do a lot with picture edit settings(contrast, temperature, etc). If you have a smart phone, the camera can do a lot. I played around a little, but still hard to read. Maybe a better picture would help.

Some other tricks..hold a piece of paper upright as your taking the picture to help reflect more light towards the letters. You may also be able to use your flash to achieve a similar effect?

You could rub a little water in the area, but this could cause the wood to swell up.
