Lemuel Newton was a member of a group of African American landscape artists known as the Florida Highwaymen who were active from the 1950s through the 1980s (and some beyond that). His brother Harold Newton was a leading member. The artists originally sold their paintings door to door, primarily in Florida (Rte 1 is where they get the “highway” name), since many galleries were racially discriminatory and wouldn’t include their work, but the group has since been duly recognized and shown in galleries and museums.
