I got this little stand at a thrift store several years ago, because at first glance it looked; a) nicely made, b) cheap, and c) potentially useful for something. It has been sitting around ever since, defying that initial thought that it'd be useful... <groan>

The only things I've ever guessed it really IS, would be the little tabletop thingie holding the table number placard at a big banquet sort of dinner, or a store counter (restaurant table?) display or signholder. Doesn't quite seem perfectly suited to either application, though...?

The whole thing is satin finished silver colored metal, the base is 4-3/8" across and weighted with a felted bottom, where the initials AR form a logo with a "MADE IN INDIA" paper sticker. It stands a little over 15" total high and the top finial can be unscrewed. Two solid metal brackets have thumbscrews allowing them to be positioned at any point on the shaft, they can be removed and reversed by undoing the top. Both of those have a slot milled through them that'd easily hold something 1/4" thick and have rubberish pads inside, presumably to protect whatever they're supposed to be holding onto. Either can be positioned with its slot facing up or down, I don't remember if I've ever moved one or not but they're both facing the same way now.

Does anybody recognize it from anywhere for anything?? PLE-E-E-E-ASE??? :-) :-) :-)

Well, as with many of my mystery objects, it can always be used as a paperweight. It does appear to be a very well made paperweight.

Because the brackets are padded, maybe it is designed to hold glass. My fist thought is it is for holding chemistry glassware, however the handle on top does not look utilitarian as would lab equipment.
