These are small plates - about 3 inches diameter - made by Franciscan Pottery which was owned by Gladding McBean - one of the great California potteries.

Did a little searching. Apparently those were shape #894 individual ashtrays. The mark dates production circa 1940-47.
:^) So pretty to be an ashtray! I’d just keep that my secret and serve a cupcake on them.
