Help us out some...what are the dimensions? And can we get a picture of the backside..
    2. Motoolz, 3 years ago
My first guess is a die stock, with the die missing. Usually there three or four pair of die together. This tool was used to cut threads onto a rod or clean up existing rusty or bent threads.

I assume no name or any identifying marks.

A die stock makes lots sense, i can see how that would work. its around 14" long by a little over an inch. No i identifying marks at all, i assumed it to be handmade.

      The back looks identical

I can see there's a slot near the bottom of the square part...

how does the thumbscrew work? I would've thought it was a threaded rod that pushes the bar down, but it doesn't appear to do that?

Same question as Dave about the thumbscrew, and/or how and what makes that clamp (?) bar move??
    9. Kwieca, 3 years ago
The thumbscrew is threaded, around 1/8th of an inch travel to move the strip of steel the slot goes from top to bottom, it is very narrow, my first thought was to accept a blade and it could be used for a scraper of sorts, but i was slowly convincing myself that there was some unnecessary machining if this was the case, or possibly an apprentice piece.

Are the ends shaped? Or do the look broken from a larger piece? The pictures aren't very clear...I keep thinking it's part of a mechanism...like a vending machine or game door...

The ends are shaped intentionally and identical both ends, unfortunately its on my desk at work and i am unable to take any clearer pics til Monday. Inside the square partand the small nib that travels and is removable, its chamfered all the way around both sides of the square.

The ends are shaped intentionally and identical both ends, unfortunately its on my desk at work and i am unable to take any clearer pics til Monday. Inside the square partand the small nib that travels and is removable, its chamfered 2/3rds of the top and bottom of the internal part of the square to allow the nib to travel, and leaving enough for it to be removed. Theres some engineering detail in the manufacture/design of this item, but lacks a quality finish overall, but totally fascinating. I hope i am not dumbing it down. Not my intention. Theres a quality around it.
