In 1898 Standard Oil Co of New Jersey bought out Imperial Oil of Canada and by the 1900s began using the trade name of ESSO for their gasoline products. They liked the name ESSO because when you say it you’re actually saying S O or Standard Oil. In 1972 they changed the marketing name of Standard Oil in the USA to EXXON but in some foreign Countries the ESSO brand is still used today.
