A sublimely carved mother-of-pearl Chrysanthemum, no doubt from Asia. This is by far the most beautiful thing I've bought in the last year. It measures 2& 5/8" (66.67 mm) wide and 2&1/8" (53.97 mm) tall. It is 3.89 mm thick at center, 2.55 mm thick at edges. It is not laminated, as can be seen from the obverse. Its pin is cheap and merely glued on, rather than set with pins, and it exhibits a little corrosion, as might be seen on the pin of a brooch perhaps 30 years old, but I realy have no idea when this was made, nor why it was not given a setting showing more regard.
Completely without markings. How I wish the carver had signed and dated his/her iridescent chrysanthemum. (Artists take note! While you may deem your work of minor importance, others may disagree in the future and want to know who you were. You matter, and what you make is an artifact of YOU.)
Note the exquisite versimilitude of the petals and how some are curled over, some at their tips and some, just at one edge; also the mind-boggling paralell-ness of those petals' striations—and how Van Gogh-like their hypnotic swirls.
If you've seen anything similar and know about when and where this came from, please message me. Thank you, in advance!
Does anyone know where or when this was made? Thank you! —April
Beautiful flower brooch, the carving design makes it come alive
