Found a few years ago at a location that had a old house and have no idea what? It looks like glassor stoneware not metal no seams so perhaps old? Ia t first thought it was a lamp see hole on the top? ^ inches tall and 7 inches bottom.

maybe an oil candle; feed the wick thru' hole in lid...
Looks like an oil lamp to me also. A wick fits thru the hole. You can buy the wicks and lamp oil at hardware stores - or even Walmart.
