Hi guys,
I'm new to Collector's Weekly but thought I'd post an item I recently picked up and need help identifying. It's a Libby glass or crystal jar wrapped in pewter. The top is hinged and the glass or crystal domed top magnifies whatever is in the jar. There is a bifocal area for extra magnification. But the top is also etched with a scene of a family of quail, making it harder to see whatever is in the jar. There is a delicate chain that is soldered to the pewter on the top as well as the pewter rim of the jar keeping the lid from opening to far.
My initial thought is that it is some kind of bug or insect magnifying jar but it seems pretty fancy for that. I got it because I felt like it was unusual (which I love) but haven't been able to dig up any information on it. Any thoughts? Any idea how old this might be?
So tiny, maybe not meant to hold food. With the quail family on top and the magnification section, I’m wondering if it could have been a little hatchery for observing quail eggs hatch….seems rather cruel tho.
It’s very interesting- I hope u get answers here.
