This Skrdlovice 5503 "Atlas Vase" is 9.5" high by 6" widest diameter and weighs 7 lbs. It was designed by Jan Kotik in 1955. I have a more tame version of this vase so have been keeping an eye out for a wilder version.

Seller advertised it as "VASE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION..WITH NO DAMAGE OR REPAIRS" asked $50 and accepted my offer of $40. I figured it was worth a look as these typically go for about four or five times as much and seem to be going up in value. Well, aside from a bit of acceptable bottom wear, it also has a significant scuff near the base, shown image 3, and a scratch near the opening at the top, shown in image 4.

I am undecided about whether to send it back, keep it and experiment with some polishing tricks I have read about, or keep it and just look at it without my glasses on. Any opinions on this? It IS a whopping big hunk of glass and I am very unlikely to spend even three times what I spent on this one for a better example.....

A bit tuckered tonight and made no attempt to economize on the size of the images, so sorry if your lights dim as you look at close ups of the images... I also just took four shots of this vase and didn't try to do my best so may try to do better another day.

Very nice and yes I sometimes wonder if vendors when you ask them if any cracks, scuffs, scratches etc forget to put their glasses on.

Great piece of glass at a good price. I personally would love this piece without worrying about its minor evidence of preloving.

Thanks for your comment jscott0363. I am taken with it!

      Thanks, Kevin!

Thanks for your comments BHIFOS! Yeah, that is a problem. A number of times sellers have responded with "surprise" that there are defects but don't deny it.

Thanks Wow22! One of the reasons I started collecting Japanese cast iron is that undescribed damage is much rarer!

Thanks skyguy. It is pretty impressive.

Thanks for loving my Kotik vase Alfie21, mp.kunst, Vynil33rpm, skyguy, sklo42,

very nice ... now did you ever pot this book you talked about to Scott ( I did keep back one book which I was able to hold on to and I may post it) ???

Thanks for the comment skyguy! Guessing you are referring to the Jones/Parik book? I am not really a serious collector of Bohemian glass, so could never justify the expense of buying the book. I live in the MidWest US and have never seen a piece of Skrdlovice, Beranek, etc., "in the wild" here. I would very much enjoy paging through the book, but cannot justify the expense just to do that.

About 30 years ago I was unemployed and in dire straits, so close to starving and being homeless, that I actually got to the point where I had to sell my most beloved books to buy food after I had sold everything else of value that I had. I took them to a bookstore on 15th Ave on Capitol Hill in Seattle where Frank Herbert used to speak and do readings when he was in town, but I can't remember the name of it. The owner said he wasn't buying any books but said he would take a look at what I had, anyway, and then his eyes got big when he saw them. He said that they were books the store should really have and he bought every one of them. I still mourn their loss. I did keep back one book which I was able to hold on to and I may post it later.

Ah post, not pot.... I have not, but I think about doing so often. It is a book of poetry by Rudyard Kipling on very thin paper with an very engaging inscription. The inscription is what made it impossible for me to part with it. I will post it soon. I am a fan of Kipling, too, though. I once memorized several of his poems but they have seeped through my skull into the ether, now...
