large leather military insignia patch

This is a rather large insignia patch at over 9" w x 11"h, made of stitched leather dyed red, white, and blue, in a shield shape with a star and a sun (?) in the blue field at the top.

I am assuming it is the logo of a US military regiment, but I don't have any idea exactly which one or from when. WW II era is a likely guess.
