CHURCH IDENTIFIED!!! SEE LAST PIC POSTED. Still can't read the writing though. --- Beautiful painting, winter scene, of this impressive orthodox church. I've tried & tried but can't read the "hand", that is, this style of writing. Perhaps a Collectors Weekly friend knows the eastern europe/russian style of lettering/writing. Can you read any of it?!
I can’t make out the rest of the writing but I believe the word Bug refers to the Bug River, which starts in Ukraine and then marks the border between Poland and Belarus. There are several Orthodox churches along it in each of those countries but I don’t know which might be depicted. At least that may narrow your search.
Thanks MMNJ! I appreciate the info! I found the church by randomly searching key words (russian, orthodox, ukraine, poland, belarus, arches, etc). Nice to know the identity. 13th-16th century I believe.
Glad to, um, help? I was way off but I’m happy you found it!
Btw the script is difficult to make out but based on your discovery I think the first word on the left is Suzdal and the longer word that looks like it starts with Kp is Kremlin, written in Russian. It’s not a language I can read, but I googled a translation- written letters look different than typed but those look like they match.
Thanks MMNJ! Well, tonight I came across a google map showing the name of towns WITH the names written in Russian alphabet underneath . Looking all around Suzdal Kremlin on the map, I see a town called Krapive to the west (a little southwest actually). In Russian lettering it's Kpan ... then other letters like "backwards N"Bbe. This may be the Kp word we're looking for!
