Big Butt Cigar Box and Advertising
In the late 90s and early 2000s this was one of my "go-to" cigars. This brand is defunct, no longer made.
My favorite cigar is made by Arturo Fuente - the Fuente Fuente Opus X. A mouthful(pun intended) to say. Not a cheap cigar.
Big Butt cigars were hand rolled(as opposed to machine) in Honduras. It was, as the ad stated "A medium-to-full-bodied cigar with a superior balance of strength, spice and earthy flavor.". It was also a long filler cigar and around 50 gauge or larger, which I prefer.
FLAVOR BLENDS
Cigar flavors are made up of different blends of tobacco to create a flavor profile. Even the wrapper is tobacco and adds to the profile. Many factors influence these flavors; geographical location, weather, etc.
LONG VS SHORT FILLER
A long filler cigar uses layers of full pieces of tobacco, rolled into a cigar to create that flavor profile. A short filler is pieces chopped up to blend and create the flavor profile..like a cigarette. Nothing wrong with either method. Sometimes you can get small pieces that end up in your mouth when smoking a short filler cigar.
64/64TH = 1 INCH
Ring gauge of cigars are measured in 64th of an inch. Ring gauge is the diameter of the cigar. This has nothing to do with the strength of the cigar. A larger cigar will last longer and may have a more complex flavor profile.
FURTHER CONFUSION OF SIZE
Cigar sizes have names. A Corona is not a brand name, it's a size. Traditionally, a Corona measures between 5 ½ to 6 inches in length. Also, it will have a ring gauge of between 42 and 44(42/64ths of an inch)
There are many different examples, these are just a few:
ROBUSTO = A short, stubby cigar, usually 4 ¾ to 5 ¼ inches in length and has a diameter of 48 to 52 ring gauge. It’s one of the most popular sizes of cigar in the USA.
PANATELA = A slim cigar – between 5 and 7 ½ inches – and with a ring gauge of 34 to 38
CHURCHILL = A larger Corona with a ring gauge of 47 and 7 inches in length
PERFECTO = up to 9 inches long and a ring gauge of 38 to 49. Perfecto is one of many cigars that has a bulge in the center.
That has to be THE coolest brand name of cigars I've ever seen!!
Thanks Scott. Wish I still had the hat. Thanks everyone for looking.
