During the first few years of exile, my grandmother helped the family economy by dressing these plastic supermarket dolls. She would dress them, by special order, copying a quinceañera dress, wedding dress, or dress them with whatever costume the customer required.
She made over two dozen for me, but I was young and very, very stupid, and at one point decided I was too old for dolls, and gave them all away.
I particularly miss one, dressed as the queen of hearts, with a white tulle skirt and red felt hearts hanging from black velvet ribbons from her waist....but I digress....
These are two little cuban peasants, or guajiros, (pronounced goo-ah-hee-roes) hand dressed by Abuela Leo.
He is wearing his guayabera and straw hat, designed for collecting sugarcane or coffee beans.
