This Sotaro Saegusa designed snake is 4.5" long x 3.25" high x 1.5" wide and weighs 1 lb 4 ounces.
This and the Saegusa Sotaro ram I added to CW at the same time were part of a 4 okimono group offered on an online auction site, 2 sheep/rams and two snakes, all different and composed of different metals, with no boxes or documentations. All four had paint loss and were lightly banged up. These two were the best of the four.
My best guess is that these were made by Saegusa's studio, with or without his assistance. All four likely came with boxes and documentation which was probably discarded.
What a great little cast iron snake! Definitely a unique piece for sure!
How good are his designs! Modernist but Japanese too.
Very cool snake!
Thanks for your comment valentino97! This is one of Saegusa's more unusual designs.
Thanks jscott0363! I have been looking for one of these at a reasonable price. Happy to add it to my collection.
Thanks for your comments, Karen! He had a huge influence on Japanese metalwork. Even more impressive, since as far as I can tell his designs were original and all of his formal training and experience was in Japan. I can find no record of his studying abroad.
Thanks for loving my latest Saegusa okimono Alfie21, Jenni, PhilDMorris, fortapache, ho2cultcha, Karen, Kevin, jscott0363, RichmondLori, valentino97, blunderbuss2 and dav2no1!
Thanks Blammoammo!
Thank you aura!
Thaks Eileen! When I was in SE Asia I saw dozens of cobras. That will get your attention. Also two step snakes. (Get bitten, take two steps and die) A lot of snakes that will kill you. Nothing poisonous where I live now... You get pretty good a spotting snakes if there are poisonous ones around.
Thanks Vynil33rpm!
