I wasn't sure what these are called so i looked it up and found three names. i like the old wood and colors. There was a nasty chip on it, which i did a quick repair on and it looks alot better.

In Japan it's known as kendama! In fact, my first thought was that this might be Japanese -- at least, I got that vibe off it, but the paint work is also reminiscent of the decoration you see on some traditional kokeshi dolls. And indeed, when I did a search on 'vintage japanese kendama', I found several that are similar, although none with these identical markings. The ones on yours are very pleasing.
Have you tried actually playing with it? Harder than it looks, I know...
