    I think that it's Chinese, but not certain. Could be Japanese - i have many of the Japanese sewing boxes now. This one has 3 swastikas as brass design elements on top of the laquered wood sides.

      It may be influenced by the Japanese occupation, though. The swastika is a symbol of Buddhism in Japan. You commonly see it on maps there to indicate 'Buddhist temple'.
