This is a very old shishi or foo dog from China - probably Shiwan, but very old Shiwan. It was used for something as it has that rectangular hole which passes all the way through the base. How old do you think this is?

i'm fairly certain that this is Ming.

Shi means lion in China. Shishi refers to two of them, apparently. i just did a bit more research and this may be considered sancai glazed and be from the Tang dynasty.

Thanks vintagelamp. i've gotten unofficial verification that this is either Ming or Tang.

I did get this evaluated by Peter Combs too, and he believes it is 19th c in the style of Ming.
