The Travel Town Museum in Griffith Park has the largest collection of steam locomotives in Southern California. Most of them were donated at the end of the steam era. They didn't get the really large ones but they have some decent ones.
Starting out is my favorite which is a 4-4-2 Atlantic. It looks small with just 4 drive wheels but it is beefy. Those drive wheels are 81" tall and it could go 100 mph which isn't bad for something built in 1904. It was made for fast passenger trains. It weighs 115 tons.
In photo 2 and 3 we have a pair of goats or switch engines. They have very small drive wheels. Photo #2 is #4439 Built by Baldwin in 1918. It weighs 78 tons. #3 is 1273 Southern Pacific built by the Southern Pacific in 1921 and weighs 76 tons.
Last is Western Pacific 26. It is a 2-8-0 Consolidation and is the heaviest of their locomotives at 119 tons. It was built in 1909 by ALCO.
Perhaps tomorrow I will post Fort Sahara so stay tuned for that!
