    The screw on the side seems to be to attach it to a table top. The handle turns, turning the gears inside.

      I have one of these (except mine is green)…..mine is in the original box and it’s a bean Frencher.
      You clamp the machine onto a table or counter top, feed whole green beans in thru the top while you turn the crank…then out come French cut green beans.
      I found it more trouble than it is worth. I’d rather just cook green beans whole than spend so much time slicing them lengthwise…..especially since canned French cut green beans from the grocery store are inexpensive.
      I’ve considered slicing herbs with it, but a knife serves that purpose easily.
      It hangs out in a kitchen cabinet but it may soon find itself in the donation box to GW (and good riddance ;^)
