    Hello everyone!!
It's Kentucky Derby weekend here in our beautiful Bluegrass State. Today is the Kentucky Oaks, which is the fillies race (The Lilies For The Fillies) and tomorrow is the Kentucky Derby, which is the boy's race (The Run For The Roses). So, I felt it only fitting to post my vintage cast iron horse head bookends. They've experienced only minor paint loss, but still in really nice condition, other than the tip of one ear chipped. These are from the 1930's - 1940's period. Though these are bookends, we actually display them as you'll see in pic #2. They're quite heavy and measure 7" tall and 8" front to back. The marking on the side (pic #4) appears to be a riding crop, but I've not been successful at finding any information on a maker who uses that as their trademark. I've only seen one other pair in all of my research.

Thanks very much for stopping in for a look!!
    Scott

Neat that you can use as bookends or put together as sculpture, nice find! Lots of detail too

      Jenni,
Thanks so much! The festivities actually start two weeks in advance of the Derby and kick off with Thunder Over Louisville, one of the largest fireworks displays in the world. Unfortunately, I'm splinted from the knee down and unable to join in on the festivities this year:(

Great race Scott, always exciting to see a longshot win. Rich Strike is related to Curlin & distantly to Native Dancer so my uncle wouldn't have been surprised, he always followed the bloodline. The fireworks sound awesome in Louisville, hope your knee is all better soon :)

      Hi Jenni,
Yes, it was a surprise ending for everyone! We were all so happy to see a longshot win the Kentucky Derby. Anyone who had their money on Rich Strike walked away with a pocket full of money.
Thanks for the well wishes!! It's actually my right foot that I had surgery on a week ago due to an injury from years ago. Hopefully, I'll be as good as new in about 5 more weeks.

      Thanks Eileen!!
I had foot surgery to correct a long ago injury. I now have two broken foot bones and a broken pinky toe with three tiny screws holding it all together in my right foot. In a matter of weeks, I’ll be back on my daily 8-10 mile walks!!
