    Hello everyone!!
A recent find for me is this vintage cast iron doorstop depicting "Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary" from the nursery rhyme of the same title. Though I do wish she was an original, she is a copy of the original that was produced by Littco Products in the early 1900's. This one was more than likely produced between the 1950’s - 1970's, possibly earlier than that. Though this one is a copy, it's NOT identical to the original. I happen to own an original, which I'll post sometime soon. This one measures 11 1/4" tall and 7 3/4" wide, while the original measures 12 1/2" tall and 8 7/8" wide. It is, however, painted nearly identical to the original.
Most of us are quite familiar with the old nursery rhyme, but few actually know the meaning behind it. So, here is an interesting factoid, thanks very much to our friends at doorstops.com.
Mary referred to Mary, who was Queen of England 1516-1553. Her executions of Protestants led to her being named "Bloody Mary".
    Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
    How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.
    The meaning behind it:
    1. "Quite Contrary" refers to her unsuccessful attempt to reverse her father Henry VIII religious changes.
    2. "How does your garden grow?" refers to her lack of heirs

Thanks very much for stopping in for a look!!
    Scott

      Thanks Eileen!!
You know that the schools here in Kentucky no longer teach nursery rhymes in the schools today. Apparently, they're considered offensive to some folks.
