This flower brooch just arrived! This is an older marcasite piece that is marked Germany and Sterling. This has a lot of detail and the enamel colors are nice. Hope you enjoy looking!

There is a beautiful orchid very similar to this one in the Luxury for Fashion Internationaler Modeschmuck Der Fior Collection London 1950-1990 catalog. This was an exhibition in Germany of jewelry from the Fior Collection a very important costume jewelry store in London. This catalog attributes the sterling enamel orchid it Hermann Schwager, Germany, circa 1955. I wonder if he also produced the many Alice Caviness brooches that are sterling, enamel and marcasite designs. Just wonderful!

Maureen, thank you so much for that info. I have several animal brooches too that I assumed were by Caviness sterling Germany. I had never heard of Hermann Schwager before. Do you think that Schawger designed them and Caviness produced them??

Hi Mrstyndall, I think like D&E or Rice Weiner or scores of other manufacturing jewelers, or even Henkel & Grosse in Germany, my bet is that Hermann Schwager designed and produced as a special label series for Alice Caviness. Or perhaps she designed some for her private label and HS produced them. I don't have any conclusive evidence on this. Hermann Schwager is in Pforzheim, Germany which is like Providence, Rhode Island, a center for jewelry production. The company is still in existence apparently, and they list their business as costume jewelry. Maybe I'll write and ask!
