Need help identifying this [Chinese?] Box

I was picking a storage unit of a man that once owned an antique shop. He had this box marked “Chinese, Early $250”. We made a pile and paid under $100 for multiple items, this box included. There is no stamp or makers mark, but I’d love to know something more about its use and history if anyone is familiar. Thanks!
