I’m hoping someone might be able to help with information about this clock. We are cleaning out our grandparents place and found this clock in their shed. We can’t find a name on the clock. The works has the name “Mason and Sullivan made in Germany” The clock measurements are approximately 17” wide x 31” at the tallest point. It has 2 keys to wind it and 3 keyholes. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Hi,
The style of your grandparents' clock is a "Pillar and Scroll". That style dates back to the 1820-30. Examples of those early clocks used wooden movements. I believe that your Mason and Sullivan Clock may have come in kit form. Your clock uses a modern German Chiming movement and probably plays the Westminster chime on each quarter with the full melody and hourly strike at the top of the hour. My guess is that it may be from the 60s-70s, but I'm not sure.
Keep in mind it's a machine and needs periodic maintenance and occasional repairs.
The mainsprings store a lot of energy so if you're thinking about running it, I would suggest that you take it to a reputable clock shop for inspection and perhaps oiling. If you would like to do some of that yourself, you can go to the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors website at https://mb.nawcc.org/
Thank you so much for the information. We already have it running and it chimes exactly the way you described it. It’s beautiful! We will either take it for maintenance or my husband will research and do it himself. I’m so glad I found this site. Thanks again for your help.
