Good day. My dad gave me this some time ago and it has been hanging on my wall for 15 or so years. He told me he thought it was something that would hang above a door to a meeting hall or tavern. The wood is brown with a sort of reddish hue. I do not see any dates or indications of who made it. There appears to be tool marks visible on the back, some sort of wooden pegs pounded into the bottom. It seems sort of unusual in that the age is forward-facing, whereas most carvings seem to depict the eagle with its head turned to the left or right...

I am hoping someone can tell me WHAT it is, as well as a ballpark on the age.

Interesting piece. I would suggest that dad was correct...it was attached to a door or possibly a podium? Probably by the pegs..An interesting fact..in the American seal, "The eagle’s head was turned to the right as the place of honor, but more importantly facing the olive branch symbolizing America as a nation of peace."

Found one similar that's attached to a bed frame. Yours looks like it may have been cut judging by the way it terminates at the bottom?
