Here's a couple unrelated 99c snags from the Goodwill loose dishes shelves, simply because both pieces are a cheery bright orange color and thus will slide right into my normal kitchen color-scheming. ;-) ;-)
The 10" plate is marked "KNOWLES UTILITY WARE MADE IN U.S.A. 38-8" on its backside in a font that struck me as either old or old-styled, and it turns out it actually might be the former as I found an old ad reference online to an Edwin M. Knowles China Co. producing similar shaped items somewhere as early as 1938, described as "a streamline modern kitchen ware shape with decorative rings" which'd seem to fit. Interestingly the advertisement doesn't seem to show actual dinner plates offered in the product lineup but does have what appears to be this piece, described instead as a "casserole tray, 10inch" that would have come accompanying a covered dish in one of two sizes. I'd thought it would become just one more 'random plate in the stack' that wouldn't bug me if it got broke, but maybe I should stick it in the drawer with my other 'old dishes' and be a little more careful with it...??
The second item is a utensil rest for the stovetop, shaped like a jug with the word SPOONER on it as if it was the label. About 7-1/4" x 4-1/2", it also reads MADE IN USA on its underside. I can't identify it any further but do believe I've seen California pottery with a similar mark and the color could also be right for that origin. The corners are slightly worn suggesting it has seen some usage in its time and though I also fully intended to just use it on my own stove when I picked it up, the more I've looked at it since has kinda got me thinking I might hang it on the wall instead just because its cute...?? ;-) ;-) ;-)
Love the orange !
