Can anyone identify this axe head? My father left it to me but only said it was very old- “pre-historic”. I’m happy to answer any questions and upload other pictures if needed.
The blade measures 11 inches from edge to edge, and 8 inches from base to blade edge.

Tallcakes— thanks for identifying it as a broadaxe. Is there anything anyone can tell me about where and when it might be from? Or, if not, how I would go about figuring this out?
commonly used to square round logs.. ie. railroad ties... look for "Knights of the Broadaxe"

A fairly common pattern, I think. It appears to have a steel edge welded to an iron body. Look at the difference in pitting along the cutting edge and the rest of the axe. A harder edge of more expensive metal on a cheaper head. Cut better and stayed sharper longer, and when the edge was completely worn away a new piece of steel could have been welded on for a new life
Do you think the absence of pitting at the edge is
from sharpening away the pits ( like as humans )
