This cast iron squirrel nutcracker is about 4.5" high x 5.5" long x 3" wide and weighs about 3 lbs. It has a "JAPAN" label on the bottom. Similar nutcrackers are very common, but described as "Victorian", "American Made", "Vintage", "Antique", "1900s", etc. Many of these appear to be identical and were probably copied by taking one of these apart and making a mold and reproducing them. Maybe this Japanese version is a reproduction? I do not know.
This one appears to be unused and only has wear to the bottom. It seems a bit small to work well and I do not have any nuts in the shell for experimentation. It is pretty well cast and will make a good paperweight if not good for anything else.
Beautiful squirrel nutcracker it's so well formed - very cute pic with the nut-sized mint :)
Very nice cast iron squirrel nutcracker! I've seen a lot of new Chinese reproductions of these, but I've not seen one from JAPAN.
Nice, especially with the label. I have an aluminum one that's a dog..part of my garage art..

Thanks, Jenni! It is a pretty well molded piece. The dang squirrel ate the mint, though. At least it was gone by the end of the session.
Thanks jscott0363! There sure are a lot of these out there, but this is the only labeled example I have seen.
Thanks dav2no1! I will check out your dog version!
