You put them over pitchers of liquid. Milk safe? Drink safe? Fly safe? It's beautifully crocheted, and has milky glass beads all around.

A milk doily
OK! Thanks! Wow. Looking at Ebay, they are really popular in Australia. I thought they were a southern U.S. thing!
The beads act as weights to keep the doily in place, but you probably already knew that.
