Hi All! Found this unusual hanging fixture this morning at an architectural salvage store. We don't see much colonial style in New Orleans, so I don't know how to evaluate this fixture. If anyone has any suggestions, I am most grateful for feedback. I am an experienced light fixture collector, but have almost no experience in the colonial style (I have had some colonial revival style fixtures before, perhaps that is what this is). It is 27.5 inches wide and has traces of black paint on it. Just in observing this thing, I notice that the canopy doesn't appear to go with the fixture. It appears to be an Arts and Crafts style canopy. The canopy was made to fit onto a gas pipe. Again, though, I don't think the canopy goes with the fixture. Also, the canopy has a modern chain attached to it. The "hook" that goes with it appears to go with the fixture. It attaches to four chains that go down to hold up the fixture. The chain has circular and triangle shaped links. The fixture has been electrified. Can anyone tell me more about this fixture?

That looks like a very old chandelier to me! Like one that was in a very large home with huge wooden entry doors where one would use a large doorknocker instead of a doorbell to let someone know you've arrived!

Looked at it again and in your last photo, that's the top. Yep, I say chandelier!

Thank you, shareurpassion, for the feedback. It looks very old to me. I suspect that it was originally lit by candle. After thinking about it over night, I am leaning more toward it being a Colonial Revival fixture. I don't remember when the process for making steel became mainstream, but it is made of steel, instead of cast iron.

I don't know if it is made of steel or wrought iron.

I may try to hang it somewhere so I can get a picture of it hanging. Trying to think of where I can hang it. If I can, I will try to attach a picture of it hanging.

Thank you, dav2no1, for your post. It really does look like a window grill.
