As a collection grows, and research is done, the manufacturer's history, along with the associated manufacturing techniques, and appoaches, emerge.
I've found it to be fascinating, when I come across the same prototype, done by competing manufacturers.
Shown are the "Globe" model (which was, by this time, an entirely Athearn product), and a Varney car, of the exact same car, even to the road number. The Gordon Varney car is the older of the two, by at least a decade, and used his preferred method of embossed cardstock, with the car sides printed on it. It dates from about the end of WWII.
The Globe model, as was typical of both the original Globe manufacturer, as well as the early Athearn cars, used metal sides, in this case, aluminium, just like the real ones. It dates to 1954.
