Found this tool at a flea market. The owner didn't know what it was used for.
It is 20" long and 7" wide at the measuring end (when closed).
I mistakenly believed it to be a double measuring caliper for wood lathe work.
Thanks to a fellow CW poster, I now know what this truly is.
It's "blacksmith's double caliper" and it was used to measure hot forgings in either length or diameter.
It has nothing to do with wood lathe work.... Sorry for the miss information.
With respect, try cali*p*er instead in your search string...?? :-) :-)
And YES, it looks like a really cool old tool, no matter what it is intended to do...

noted and respelled, spelling was not my best subject. Even though I had good marks in English class, I never am too far from a portable dictionary, spell check or my wife Elaine to correct me.
Looks like blacksmith double calipers..

hi Dav2no1,
I think you hit it. I looked at the sight that you referred me to and ....
there it is, my blacksmith caliper.
Thanks a bunch.

Glad to help <°?_)~
