This Japanese donabe is about 8" in diameter x 5" high and includes an instruction sheet but is not marked. It has an inscribed, hand painted decoration consisting of three fish and three cross hatch marks on the lid. The handle also has a brown glaze applied. There is what appears to be a spout for pouring from the pot. I tried resting a spoon on the lid and resting the end of the spoon in the spout but that did not work well at all. If it is meant to be used that way it may have come with a spoon better suited for doing that. There is some craquelure to finish of the interior, mostly on the edge where the lid rests. The interior is glazed similar to the rest of the pot.

I think that the images in the instructions suggest that is style of donabe is meant to be heated in an oven or microwave, not over direct flame. Maybe I am misinterpreting the images, though. It is probably meant to be used for cooking sukiyaki or shabu shabu for two people.

It is possible that there is something on the instruction sheet which identifies the maker and clarifies how to use it. I find it quite surprising that the sheet has survived for so long, as I think this pot is a few decades old. I am not sure it this still qualifies as a traditional donabe if it is not meant to be used over an open flame. Close enough for my collection!

I have been looking for a donabe for a while and not expecting to find one here, but I have been surprised by what things I have found here before. This pot has obviously used and was quite dirty when I bought it but it cleaned up very nicely. It is in great shape, no chips, cracks, etc.
