This crane themed porcelain jar is 5" high x 4" widest diameter. There is an indecipherable (to me) mark in gold under the lid and under the base. Though the lid is a different shade of pink than the body of the jar, I am sure that they go together because of the marks. There are some hints of gold paint on the shoulder of the jar but it is mostly worn off.

The lid has a series of holes in it and there is a tray that fits under the lid and onto the opening in the jar. The tray has a small gold capped bird pinned in it. There is a lot of raised decoration on the lid and body of the jar and these decorations, and the painting appear to have been done by hand.

This is very fine porcelain, and I can see the shadow of my fingers through it when held to a light. That being said, the base is very rough. There may have been some sort of pad or foot glued to the bottom in the past. The bottom side of the round tray is also rough as is the rim of the jar, perhaps to ensure a good seal against the jar?

My best guess is that this jar is for storing spices, meant hold spices in the jar and some sort of scented material (a spice sample?) in the tray under the lid, Just a guess. Dunno!

It looks to be Japanese, but I have never, except for marked Noritake porcelain, seen a Japanese piece marked in gold like this. I have seen some Imari stuff with a stamped gold mark. I did find a similar Kutani transfer ware jar including round tray but no holes in the lid. The seller was pretty clueless as to what it was, but it had a definite generic red Kutani mark. I guess one might be able to interpret the mark under the lid of this jar as Kutani.

Thoughts on what this is and where it was made are welcome. I will inset better images of the marks when I get access to better software..

Thanks for your comments, Jenni! It has two cranes on it. A pretty complex piece.

Thanks for your comments, PhilDMorris! It is pretty well executed. I wonder why the artist decided to have different shades of pink for the lid and body? Seems odd.

Thanks for loving my porcelain jar Vynil33rpm, PhilDMorris, Jenni, Kevin, sherrilou, vcal, fortapache, BHIFOS and dav2no1!
