This pottery bowl is 6" in diameter x 1.5" high. It is signed on the bottom and also stamped "MADE IN NIPPON". It has a metallic ring to it when tapped. Probably made 1891-1921 based on the Nippon stamp. I have not been able to identify the signature.
When I first noticed this style of pottery I equated it with American raku ware based on the feel and sound of the pottery, but later discovered that the Japanese concept of raku pottery is very different from the rest of the world's concept. I do not know if there is a Japanese name for this stuff, and just call it "kuro ware", black pottery, until I learn more about it.
