I just got these in on Saturday, one only was supposed to have a crack but both do, as well as the usual nibbles on some of the feet. Never mind they were a bargain and a pair. You have to pick them up to see the crack in one. The bonus was that the clear lowers have a bit of uranium in them and glow well under UV.
Another reason for posting these is the dirt that appeared after I washed them. I can only presume it is sitting in the gap at the bottom between the clear base which is folded over the bottom of the vase. When I washed them it floated up between the vase body and the leaves that grip it. They are pretty well sealed at the top and I can't seem to get it out. I had another vase that also did this, it's sitting in the bottom of a box somewhere as I just can't get it out. Help!!!
you are lucky not only so nice but a pair
That dirt can be challenging to remove, I've dealt with plenty with over the years, mostly on vases with applied decoration. One thing I can recommend is soaking the whole item in a bucket of water for a while, as it can loosen up the dirt. Not a quick fix, but can be helpful. I've also found that a very fine artist's paint brush can be used to slip into those seemingly inaccessible spaces between the applied decoration & vase. The brush needs to have soft synthetic "bristle" that is the longest & thinnest available, for flexibility. I warn you now that this is a slow & tedious process, but it can be very rewarding when the dirt shifts! Best done with the item sitting under a fine stream of running water in a sink.
PS - these are a great pair!
Thanks Marin, I had hoped you had found a cleaner that gave good results. Looks like I need to go to an art shop, get a finer brush and dig up some more perseverance :)
Also while typing this early in the morning I shined my UV torch on them in the dark and the whole vase lights up. The last picture above was taken during the day with the curtain drawn so not a dark room.
