This plate is 7.25" in diameter x 1" high. They cup is 3" high x 2.5" diameter. I think that the design is of stalk of rice. Both pieces are hand made and decorated. The design is slightly incised into both. There is some dark speckling to the glaze and and a white stripe on one side of the bottom. Not sure what the "XXX" signifies.
I think have seen the "XXX" mark while researching Mashiko ware pottery. These pieces may be Mashiko pottery. I found a similarly designed and marked set of bowls and plates on an online auction site but the seller had no one information about it.

I found both pieces for $1 each at a local Habitat for Humanity Restore store. After finding the second piece, I did a thorough search but did not find any more of it.
I seldom go to that store as they have a lot of broken stuff, partial items, etc. That is where I found the set of boudoir lamps that I posted recently. In the same visit, I found an amazing little porcelain Japanese sauce pitcher, but missing its top. Really stunning work. I will post it by and by.
If anyone has seen this "XXX" marked pottery before, please let me know! At least sure that it is Japanese, based on the Yunomi.
Very nice and what a bargain!!! Many years ago we had a lovely elderly lady that lived across the street from us. Her late husband traveled the world over and every time he'd visit Japan he'd bring her back a teacup and saucer. She gave each of my boys one when they were born. We still have those beautiful teacups and treasure them.
What a great memory, jscott0363! I was happy to find these two pieces. Too bad the person selling the pieces on ebay wants so much for their stuff, or I might try to build a set of this stuff.
My grandfather used to collect teacups and saucers, but I was in SE Asia when he died. Luckily my parents grabbed two sets for me.
Thanks, jscott0363 and sherrilou!
