When i first spotted this, i thought i had found another tansu, but when i picked it up, i knew it couldn't be Japanese as it is very heavy - made with lots of wood. But it may have been made by a Japanese or Asian person here in this country. The base is covered with calf skin leather which is a very nice touch. ugh! another cabinet to house.
The shape of this is exactly like IKEA's Moppe mini chest of drawers, I know as I have one, purchased about 15 - 20 years ago. It's supplied unpainted but of course can be decorated as one wishes.
i think that's what it is. i have seen it before. someone papered it w/ a very nice Japanese paper. I added the red edges. It had white edges which i didn't like much. i like it better now.
IronLace - did the Ikea one come with a leather or leather like base? it feels like calf skin, but it's probably a good fake.
This is very well decorated, & the red edges really set off the green patterned paper. We have "hacked" a fair few IKEA pieces over the years, but this one was left as is. My original one did not have any leather/leather - like base, the whole item was birch plywood. So, either a further aspect of customisation or maybe variations were sold in different countries?
