Can someone please tell me what this is? It's carved like an ashtray on the bottom and he has a hole for a mouth. A pipe cover possibly? I think the word japan is on the back but it's hard to tell. Any help would be appreciated

At first I was thinking water dropper for calligraphy. Then I saw the notch at the bottom and thought incense. That's exactly what it is..an incense burner. You are missing the base.

      Here's an example I found..

Thank you very much. It seems like I seen one like it on antiques roadshow a while back and I was thinking that the man said it was a cover for a pipe but incense burner is probably the correct answer so thank you for your help

nice detective work dav! I think Friendlyflyer is talking about a pie bird - which are placed in the middle of a pie and help control any boiling over of the fruit filling. those have a much larger and smoother hole in the base and straight up through the mouth.
