The only stamp on this brooch is a tiny 830S on the back. I thought it could be by Henrik Moller, but I’m not positive. The faces all being symmetrical and having uniform expressions and the small bar across the centre hole makes me wonder if it might be by another maker, although the exaggerated curled C Clasp is similar to Moller’s designs. Frisenberg was another suggestion, but I’m not too familiar with his pieces. Any suggestions as to a maker?

What an amazing piece! I am surprised no one has commented as there are many fine antique jewelry experts here!

I love the faces which give a beautiful Celtic look on this piece. Quite Irish looking but now most of the pieces can have a look from another country. Gorgeous !~

830 is one of the lower grades of what is acceptable in silver. It is often referred to as "coin grade", as many coins are made of this lower end of the scale silver. Without a signature it is hard to attribute a piece to a known artist.

Hello, I believe this is by Leif Gruer. There's a pendant of identical design by that maker on eBay at the moment.

I'm not sure if I can post the link here , but if you do a Web search on 'HUGE ANTIQUE NORWEGIAN SILVER 830s PENDANT MADE BY LEIF GRUER NORWAY' you will certainly find it.

This designer seems to be fond of a central "buckle" motif -- I also found an ended listing for a brooch by him that features a faux buckle even more prominently (see 'ANTIQUE 830s SILVER BROOCH BY LEIF GRUER NORWAY VIKING THEME').

Thanks everyone and thank you rhineisfine for identifying the maker. Apparently Leif Gruer was Norwegian and this piece would have been made 1890 - 1920. He was a contemporary of Henrik Moller and they both worked in the Dragestil style. Great job. I have a few Moller pieces and this is very similar to his work. I hope I can find out more about mr Gruer.
