I believe that I need your help on this one, guys and girls.
I saw this clamp like tool at an auction where they had a lot of primitives.
After carefully trying to guess it's purpose, and asking other tool collectors, I gave up on it.
when it was selling, no-one was interested in bidding on it, so, when it went down to $3.00,
I bid on it and to my surprise, nobody bid and higher.
It is not a make-do type of tool, it is quality made of hardwood, maybe, oak or ash.
It is about 24" long x 6" wide.
It has a clamping effect on one end and the other end has a wooden screw pivoted in the middle with a wooden hinge.
tightening or loosening this screw, will adjust the clamping effect of this vice like tool.
the actual clamp is made of an iron insert and has adjustable sliding stops for accurate setting.
This is not a home workshop tool; it was made for some kind of industrial application.
Has anyone seen a similar tool?

Very Interesting A/O, as Uusual ! 2 questions, Is it sitting on a floor stand, and can you show it in a closed, or clamping position?

I'm thinking you have an Old Saddle and or Harness Makers Stitching Clamp.

      YOUR THOUGHTS?

that's the confusing thing, LZ, It has no looks of a stand or anywhere that a stand or base was connected. You can see by the photos that the clamp is fully open at about 3/4", so, there is little travel in opening. I don't see how a saddle could fit in the clamp.... too small of an opening.
I've seen saddle clamps and leather stitchers, but they always had a way to fasten the clamp to the floor or workbench. I Thank you for your help, but I am still puzzled.

You always throw the easy ones to us. Not having any earthly idea, I'm wondering if it could be for rebinding old books. That probably failing, I'll go with Iz and the saddle thing.

Hey, you know what bb2, you might have something with your book rebinding idea.
The tool doesn't need a mounting stand. It lies directly on a table and can move around at will. Also, a book binder doesn't need a lot of opening space.

I also thought about a book press..but confused because it looks like a stop in the front. I was thinking it was some sort of forming press? But if it was a book cover press, you might need that extra material for the spine to wrap around and attach?

The top left picture..the base looks like there's words on the side? Is it just weird uniform scratches?
    8. hotairfan hotairfan, 2 years ago
no, there is no stamping or writing anywhere.
Thank all of you for your interest.
      This one might be unsolvable.

When you find out what it is, you will probably have it working on steam !
