With all the talk about “tanks” , in the news, I thought I’d share a couple that I own, but if a more peaceful (and fun) nature. Shown are two of the Athearn 0-4-2T tank locomotives, the first steam locos to actually make the hobby store shelves, from Athearn. These had no prototype, but were based on typical switch locos, of the era, thus their familiar appearance (and also the persistent rumor that they were based on an actual prototype).
Both are brand new, mint in their boxes, one “Ready to Run”, the other in “kit” form, with parts envelopes still sealed. A “kit” meant mostly the installation of detail parts, drive rod, valve gear, etc. The RTR model has the somewhat hard to find red box insert, which prominently proclaimed its maker’s mark.
I have not seen that box art before. Interesting that they made some saddle tankers.
