We bought this wonderful decanter about five month ago to Juan Carlos Caro Jr., but I wanted it since the first time I saw but as it was a present from his mother Juan Carlos did not want to sale it, in fact I know he loves glass and rare decanters. He presented it to me as Murano glass, though I had told in my posts that here in Córdoba anything of bright colored glass is denominated Murano. But I knew it was Clichy or Legras, as many other glasses done by these company.
The Cristallerie de Clichy had more than 300 workers in the 1860s and became the third French crystal factory after Baccarat and Saint Louis. In 1869, the 2 sons of Amédée Maës: Georges and Amédée took over the management of the company. It becomes the Maës frères company. It ceased all activity in 1871 during the Franco-Prussian War. Upon recovery, the crystal factory specializes in table services: liquor services, "muslin glasses" with high quality cut and engraved decorations. In 1881, Amédée Maës due to family and financial reasons decided to rent the crystal factory to that of Sèvres in agreement with his brother. The sale formed in 1889: the Cristalleries de Sèvres and Clichy united. Around 1896, the activity was greatly slowed down following economic difficulties and a fire. It continued until 1932 before being absorbed by the Cristalleries de Choisy le Roi. The objects made at the Cristallerie de Clichy are not signed but instead labelled. But I am almost convinced that this is a Legras product, done in the style of Clichy, several delails like the free form of the handle and the three lobulated peak. On the web you can see several Legras decanters with this pattern in blue and white in different shapes. It has 26 cm tall and has a polished pontil in the foot. You can see the wonderful pulled up white stripes over the blue acqua… I tried to catch the relief of the lines, it seems a rugby ball flattened and the stopper of crystal is so well cut that I think it is a later addition. Before the first war.... Thanks so much for reading.
