Hello everyone!!
Nearing the end of my bronze horse sculpture posts is this bronze mare and foal sculpture by Pierre-Jules Mêne. This one is quite large and heavy. P.J. Mêne's fine details are simply amazing to me. It was sculpted in the early to mid-1800's, but this one is a reproduction of course. It's signed, as you'll see in the last photo. This one measures 17" long, 14" tall and weighs in at nearly 28lbs!
For those who are unfamiliar with P.J. Mêne, here's a short history of him. Pierre-Jules Mêne (25 March 1810 – 20 May 1879) was a French sculptor and animalier. He is considered one of the pioneers of animal sculpture in the nineteenth century. Mêne was born on 25 March 1810 in Paris, France. As a teenager he worked for his father, a metal turner. By 1837 he was casting his bronze sculptures in his own foundry. Mêne produced a number of animal sculptures, mainly of domestic animals including horses, cows and bulls, sheep and goats which were in vogue during the Second Empire.
Thanks very much for stopping in for a look!!

Reproduction or not, the art is simply superb! How old is this piece? Have you ever come across an original Mene or Rembrandt for sale?
Thanks Eileen!!
This one is no more than a few years old. I've never came across and original Rembrandt or Pierre-Jules Mêne pieces. If I did, I'm certain that I couldn't afford them:)
