Look at this 291 yo passport in beautiful handwriting. The USA didn't even exist then. By the way, the earliest travel documents for North America were the British permission to enter the districts, now states.

Yes, the earliest in my collection is from 1646. The word passport only came up in the 15th Century. Before they were rather recommendation/protection letters from your king, lord, or local government. However, passport from the 17th century are already hard to find, imagine 16th century...
