I worked in the Engineering Dept of Murphy Oil USA at the Superior WI refinery for 13 years back in the 1980s. Our gasoline was branded as SPUR. We had another refinery down in Meraux, Louisiana. Home office was in El Dorado, Arkansas.
SPUR gasoline and other products used by motorists, industry, and the utilities were marketed through over 1200 Spur service stations, and some strategically located bulk storage terminals in 15 states including the upper midwest and the Southeast United States.
I have a collection of older SPUR items including pump globes, and porcelain pump signs.
When Murphy Oil USA sold their two refineries (they are still in well drilling and exploration), so did the SPUR brand of gasoline. It appears that they destroyed most of the SPUR plastic signs because they just sort of disappeared.
Hey thanks for the info guys it's pretty cool to read little history on it it came from gas station in north Dakota that's really old and about to close its doors. But I was able to talk to owners and the stories about how it used to be big truck stop with restaurant sounded pretty awesome.
